What motivates a professional cyclist to enter the dark, seedy world of systemic doping, and what measures will he take to cover this up?
A young, American professional cyclist-Philip LaPont-is coerced into a team sponsored doping program while attempting to be chosen for a Tour de France cycling team. At first he dislikes cheating, but then he begins to like the winning brought by the performance-enhancing drugs. To deflect attention, he conspires with his mother to accuse his own father-a pompous and arrogant retired Philosophy professor-of a heinous crime. As lies are spun and lives unraveled, are the deeper wounds of loss and callousness in a family's history enough to drive a son beyond redemption?
Cast the First Stone eBook Shawn Rohrbach
There's little solace in Shawn Rohrbach's "Cast the First Stone." Those seeking sunny characters and happy endings would be better served by "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" or Shirly Temple DVDs. But this engaging short novel offers a line-up of complex characters interacting in the tiny, dysfunctional universe of the LaPont family. Let's see: first there's Philip, the novel's young protagonist, a promising racing cyclist with an eye on competing in the Tour de France. Then there's his father, Bradley, a philosophy professor of arrogant bent who takes particular delight in publicly abasing and embarassing his students. Philip's mother, Marilyn, appears a willingly subservient adjunct to the professor while covertly spinning plans to escape from the Purgatorial family. Bobby, Philip's recently deceased teen age brother,a suicide, rounds out the menage. Sit back, read, and watch as surviving family members slide down the chute to their own destruction: Philip, as a slave to chemically enhanced athletic success, finds his Tour de France ambitions dashed; the professor experiences an epiphany on the beaches of southern France where he obsesses on naked boys and becomes the focus of a police investigation; and Marilyn, in the book's final pages, sees her long-nurtured dreams go up in flames. There's a lot in this book to recommend it,in particular to those with sardonic, maybe misanthropic tastes. One such tasty tidbit: wife Marilyn
eagerly conspires with her divorce lawyer about the emerging pedophilia scandal enhancing her "take" from the professor's assets. Priceless, and worthy of a wry chuckle.

Cast the First Stone eBook Shawn Rohrbach Reviews
Shawn Rohrbach has written a compelling novel that looks at the inner workings entitled individuals. As the main character gets caught up in doping for bicycle racing, his father becomes entrenched in a child pornography scandal and each of them finds a way to justify his behaviors farther and farther. A gripping read.
